We are a couple of hrs from Alpena, but are checking new ice on  Tawas Bay today.

Thanks Bill. Tawas Bay was partially frozen two weeks ago and the part that was frozen was snow covered. But if the northeast end locked up, we might be able to launch from the state park. I'd probably come up and sail on Sat PM if it looks good. Please keep us posted.

The ice at Tawas City, Mi. is a "5".  The west portion of the bay blew out and has reformed with ice 6 to 8 in thk.  40% snow covered with 1/2" and an occasional drift of 1 to 2".  There are numerous obstacles, i.e. chunks of previous ice that got locked up in the new ice and rough seams that can be sailed over in most areas.  Access to the ice is through a 400' lane plowed by the City of Tawas off Tawas City Prk.   2 boats sailed for a short time today with more boats expected tomorrow.
