Title: Rear Deck Block Size Post by: sonic on February 12, 2011, 05:05:28 PM Fairly new to the sport. Have an older DN just put a rear block adjuster on the deck. Was wondering what the difference is between running small blocks opposed to larger ones?
Title: Re: Rear Deck Block Size Post by: Bob Rast DN1313 on February 13, 2011, 08:07:55 AM Not much difference, some sailors like small blocks to get boom lower on the deck.
some like larger blocks better mechanical advantage, more head room when tacking And some sailors use a riser with either small or large blocks Bob rast DN 1313 Title: Re: Rear Deck Block Size Post by: sonic on February 13, 2011, 06:19:51 PM Thanks for the feedback bob just got a new boom from ron and still figuring out the block placement. I think i will switch to the larger blocks i could use more head room.
Title: Re: Rear Deck Block Size Post by: Bob Rast DN1313 on February 13, 2011, 07:07:53 PM I use a 2" riser and like the clearance, when on port you can sheet out a little and look under the boom instead of a small window in the sail also keeps you goggles on when you tack .
I started with a track on a 1 Inch square tube (steering tube and eventually added another piece under to get 2" Title: Re: Rear Deck Block Size Post by: sonic on February 15, 2011, 06:26:11 PM Thanks for the advise going to start off without it and see how i do. Always have the summer to work on the riser and i like the pics you posted.

FWIW, I think the two sizes of blocks people commonly use are 40mm and 57mm, so the difference isn't very big either way. There's a related post about boom/deck height (and the reason you want the shortest distance) I made in a thread about the Forstman boom that might be interesting: http://dnamerica.org/forum/index.php?topic=1061.msg3529#msg3529 Title: Re: Rear Deck Block Size Post by: sonic on February 16, 2011, 04:44:10 PM Funny i read that the other day. I found the forstman boom did make a difference in performance. I'm just tweaking the block sizes around and the placement of them.
