Title: National Letters for the DN - VOTE
Post by: Mark Isabell - DN5014 on October 17, 2011, 10:23:25 AM
Any idea why the DN Class uses "KC" for Canada and Estona uses "C"?

Any idea why Australia uses "KA" rather then "A"?

Any idea why the United Kingdom uses "K" rather then "UK"?

Don't forget to vote "YES" to Proposal #1

They are the "old style" IYRU 2-letter national ids.
Most of the old UK colonies ids' started with "K".
For example: KB (Bermuda), KZ (New Zealand), KH (Hong Kong), KR (Rhodesia), KK (Kenya), etc.

I thought it was curious that the proposal (from Europe) didn't include the option to use the current 3-letter ISAF ids, but I think the idea was to reduce workload on the scorers, so it made some sense to stick with the current ids.

Cheers,

Geoff S.

Hm. If I declared myself a Songapore sailor, could I be KS 1?

Good explaining but not curious, cause we intended to preserve the historic old national ID's especially from the new (old) Baltic countries, which has the advantage that we have not to change and stick so much 3-letter salad in our sails and also the scorers will thank us. The ISAF ID's are for watersailing and a little bit difference to hard water sailing should be. Beside this all former result lists and membership lists will not become outdated due to other national letters. There is no need for something new, when the current one is pretty good. But we hadn't it in our written rules so far.
