Title: Boom Stripe Measurement Clarification Needed Post by: T Thieler US 5224 on May 27, 2012, 01:48:12 PM May sound like I'm splitting hairs here but I have a question about the stripes we are all supposed to have on our booms;
The rules says the "forward edge shall be 8'10" or less from the forward edge of the sail slot..." My question is, how muchless than 8'10" is acceptable? Any help would be appreciated... Think Ice! (yes, I know it's still only May....) Depending on who made the sail and what the cut is, the aft end of the sail can come pretty close to the stripe ( I know one of mine does ). So I'd suggest keeping the stripe as close to 8' 10" as possible. Bob
Title: Re: Boom Stripe Measurement Clarification Needed Post by: DN 805 on May 31, 2012, 09:44:34 AM The requirement is that 8'10" is the maximum. "or less" means the minimum is 0'0".
The important thing to remember is that the measurement is taken from the forward edge of the sail slot. This is because the rule was written when we used wood masts with wood sail slots and the mast was cut away below below the point where the sail entered the sail slot. On my booms I have the band at 8'9 5/8", just to make sure that when I change masts the band will still be legal. ..Jane Pegel TC chair DN 805 Title: Re: Boom Stripe Measurement Clarification Needed Post by: T Thieler US 5224 on June 01, 2012, 04:56:49 AM OK, that explains it- thanks for the clarification and the story behind the wording!
Next question- does it have to be "painted" as it says in the book or can I use a 1/2"wide piece of tape? Think Ice.... T Title: Re: Boom Stripe Measurement Clarification Needed Post by: DN 805 on June 04, 2012, 09:03:48 AM Tape is not acceptable. "paint" means "paint".
