Title: Lake Geneva Post by: bmintz on February 25, 2014, 08:40:05 PM I sailed there today. There was 5% snow cover. The ice was rough. Maybe a 4. Solid, 2 feet thick. Buddy Melges was out sailing. No shell ice. 2 1/3 miles from Fontana there is a seam that I did not try to cross. Not ideal, but sailable. My Max speed was 40 Mph. No hazards, no holes, no cracks, no open water, very few fishing shacks. I

Every attempt at sailing has been on the west end of Geneva Lake, out of Fontana. it is possible to sail 2.5 miles to the east before encountering a huge pressure ridge. Access to the ice is via the public beach. Do not leave trailers on the beach. Possible to drive onto the ice. The last sailing was on Tuesday, February 25th. Bill Mintz sailed his DN, Bud Melges and Burly Brellenthin sailed Burly's Skeeter, Commodore Rick Pappas and Chuck Kaye sailed Chuck's stern steerer. On Wednesday it was too cold and too windy to sail. Colder and windier today. The ice surface is rough and has been considered not suitable for racing, but improving each day with the sunlight and wind apparently polishing the surface. On Friday an attempt will be made to again sail to determine whether there are racing conditions. The local Skeeter Ice Boat Club races B Division Skeeters, Nites, and DNs. Visitors are welcome, please start at the ends of the line. We race Saturdays, Sundays, and also on Wednesday afternoons (weather permitting) The Club Sailing Committee will make a decision late Friday afternoon concerning the weekend schedule. ...Jane Pegel, member Skeeter Ice Boat Club Sailing Committee Title: Re: Lake Geneva Post by: DN 805 on February 28, 2014, 02:33:51 PM On Friday morning, February 28th, members of the Skeeter Ice Boat Club Sailing Committee inspected the ice on the west end of Geneva Lake, WI, accessing the ice at the Fontana beach and going 2.5 miles to the east to the huge pressure ridge and also shore-to-shore in a north-south direction. The ice continues to be rough and rutted from cars and snowmobile tracks. It is possible to cruise with an iceboat but not possible to set a race course.
The Skeeter Ice Boat Club has cancelled racing for the weekend of March 1-2 ....Jane Pegel, DN 805 Title: Re: Lake Geneva Post by: DN 805 on March 01, 2014, 07:14:16 AM It is now Saturday morning, March 1st. The Geneva Lake, WI, area received a 1 inch dusting of snow last night but it has stopped as the day is breaking. More snow forecast for later today and tonight. There is a nice breeze and some boats will be cruising today, but no racing.
The good news is that by the end of the coming week the forecast is for upper 30's and maybe even some rain. That should improve our ice conditions. ...Jane Pegel |
