Title: 2008 Western Regional Results Post by: Jim McDonagh [us5214] on March 11, 2008, 02:24:05 PM The 2008 DN Western Lake Regional Championship Regatta was this year held on Lake Geneva, WI, March 8th & 9th.
The ice was smooth with small drifts 1” high. The temperature Sat & Sunday stayed below 30 degrees, so they were a little stiff. Saturday breeze was light and the north direction made it very shifty coming over and around the West point of Williams Bay. This made for tricky conditions that rewarded those who sail with their heads out of the boat. It was more like dinghy sailing than your typical speed fixes all iceboat Regatta. 4 races in the Gold fleet and 3 in the Silver were completed on Saturday before the breeze died. Saturday night we had a Pizza & beer/cocktail party upstairs at Chucks in Fontana right at the launch. Sunday’s wind clocked to ESE, which was favorable because it was along the length of the lake allowing for a more steady wind. We were also able to stretch the course to over 1 mile. It was still shifty but with the bigger course you were able to stretch out. It did snow during a few races making the visibility poor, but the new MONSTER MARKS provided by the class association headed up by Randy Rogoski were a big help. We completed all 7 races in both fleets by the early afternoon. John Dennis was once again the Champion. He has won the trophy 8 times. A special thanks to Bob Pegel for running the races. He did a great job getting the races off in tricky conditions. Bob’s long time Renegade friend, Arlyn LaFortune, assisted him with the course details. Tony Orlebeke and his friend Jason from Sheboygan worked quickly with course changes and scoring the races. Thanks to Lou Loenneke for helping with the logistics of hotel and party location preparation. And thanks to all the sailors who traveled from NY, PA, OH, MI, IN, IL, MN and WI.
