I'll try to block out the time to get up there! One question, blocks or rope, what is the pefered starting line? I'm not sure there is a preference. Each has its advantages/disadvantages. For a small (20'ish boats) informal regatta, you may even be able to get away without a starting line at all... Cheers, Geoff S. Title: Re: First Annual Northern Superior DN Regatta,November 2010. Post by: DN 5449 on June 15, 2010, 08:25:49 AM Here is the first choice location and accomadations. The owner has agreed to a great rate of $35 per person (that is Canadian ).Lake is ideal for freezing early as it averages 7' in depth. He has pretty much assured me there will be ice by the third week in Nov.
http://www.windypine.com/cottages.htm. There is enough accomadations to hold 50-60 people. Title: Re: First Annual Northern Superior DN Regatta,November 2010. Post by: DN 5449 on June 16, 2010, 09:30:41 AM The Famous Stanley Hotel Roadhouse is just up the road.Best burger you will ever have.

Title: Re: First Annual Northern Superior DN Regatta,November 2010. Post by: DN 5449 on October 31, 2010, 05:15:54 PM Spent the afternoon surveying the primary regatta site.White Fish Lake in Nonalu On. it is an awesome location. The Lake is 10 miles long 2 miles wide and situated at high elevation making for good winds. The Windy Pines Resort is breath taking.Beautifull new fully furnished cabins include a hot tub and H.D. flat sceen T.V,Stove fridge..all the luxuries.
There was already a film of ice by shore today.Unfortunatly the high reached 7 Celcious.Keep in touch as the weather here is cooling rapidly.Best bet is 3rd or 4th weekend of November. Title: Re: First Annual Northern Superior DN Regatta,November 2010. Post by: DN 5449 on November 24, 2010, 10:13:58 AM Unfortunatly after all the hype a regatta here in Thunder Bay during November does not look like it is going to happen. This has been a very unusual November.Hopfully I have not discouraged people from comming here again when the conditions warrent. This location really has good potential for very early sailing.Talked with an owner of one of the resorts at the primary location, and he was very enthused about hosting a regatta.he said he would also sponser some door prices,he has a heated garage for any maintence work. The lodgeing is located right on the Lake.He is willing to let it go for $20 a person. So the good news is I have made some good contacts for the future.
Title: Re: First Annual Northern Superior DN Regatta,November 2010. Post by: ERIC ANDERSON on November 24, 2010, 11:02:18 AM Don’t get discouraged. Holding regattas is a tough business. It is a lot of work and scouting to find a place. Thanks for making the effort. After you do this a while, you learn to go with the flow. It is always a gamble, you do a lot of driving sometimes and don’t get to sail.
On the other hand, now you understand why the class blocks out a whole week for a NA regatta that may happen in 2 days if the weather and ice are just right. Maybe we start in Thunder bay, and then move to Red Bank in New Jersey. Cheers, Eric |
