Title: Used Sails Post by: keukaflyer on August 23, 2010, 07:50:25 AM I am looking for a used sail in good shape that would work well for recreational sailing. We currently have a solid ash mast, and a hollow wood mast made of ash and redwood wrapped in glass. Planning on getting a new mast for the following season, but for now we are looking for a good all-around sail for fun at a reasonable price.
Thanks. If you have wood mast and/or boom that has a wood sail slot your are likely going to find if difficult to fit the sail into the slot because the corner fittings and batten pockets on the sail are set close to the bolt rope. If someone offers you a used sail, make sure to inquire as to the distance between the bolt rope of the luff and foot of the sail and the batten pockets, headboard, and tack and clew rings. Then measure the outer thickness of your sail slot to make sure the sail will slide into your mast and boom. It is possible to have the corners and forward ends of the batten pockets moved to accommodate a wood sail slot, but if you pay a sail maker to do this, the cost may be more than it is worth spending on the sail. You mght consider acquiring a used composite mast before you invest in a newer sail. Some guys might have a sail/mast combo price affordably.
