Title: Houghton Lake, 12/5/13
Post by: DN5358 on December 05, 2013, 04:26:29 PM
I stopped by Houghton Lake (MI) today and it survived the week wonderfully.  3"+ of beautiful ice.  It was way too windy to set up and sail.  A few small drain holes were found 2-3" in diameter and all were skimmed over.  If the winds were less I would have been sailing.  With tonights temps this will be wonderful tomorrow.  Which is where I plan on being.

The premier event this weekend is the Great Western Challenge being held in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Sailors from Nova Scotia, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and even Holland and Russia are in attendance.
BUT for some of us who were not able to get away and take the extra time off, Houghton Lake in Michigan is offering Black Ice which is rated at an "8" Many sailed it today in big winds. Reports are that there was about 4+ inches on the course, and there was an area that was away from the course that had about 2". Many hotels available there, including the comfort suites next to the launch area. We expect to have a course and run scrub races all weekend as conditions allow.

Comfort Inn had rooms for $50 plus tax w/ pool, hot tub and breakfast.  Not a bad deal.

Sailing was wicked fast today.
