Title: Tapered Main Sheet
Post by: Ayes on December 07, 2009, 12:06:37 PM
I am looking for specs and a supplier for a tapered Main Sheet, something like 1/8" to 3/8" and the length each part should be.  Is there a supplier you may recomend?

Oh, and while I have you on the line, I also need to replace the numbers on my sail.  Again I am looking for a supplier.

Thanks in advance.

At Sailing Specialists, Inc., in Williams Bay, WI (Iceboat center of the World), we stock Marlow tapered line.  This line has a smoothe no-stretch dyneema core and a fuzzy polyester cover.  The dyneema core is 1/4" diameter.  The outside diameter including the polyester cover is 3/8".    This line is made specifically for tapering with minimal labor.  We do not charge for the labor of stripping off the cover and seizing with waxed twine at the junction so the cover will not slide off the core.

I use a 30 ft. piece.  23' full diameter, 7' stripped to 1/4".  When sailing, the junction is inside the aluminum boom.  The back boom and deck blocks have the 1/4" and the forward boom block and the ratchet on the tiller post have the 3/8".
Having a 30 ft. mainsheet allows the sail to be eased all the way to the shrouds, which makes it convenient when crossing pressure ridges or maneuvering in the parking area.  I tie the cockpit end of the mainsheet to an eyestrap on the cockpit floor so it stays in the boat.

30 ft. of mainsheet is $53.70, f.o.b. Williams Bay, WI.  Sorry, the only color available is white w/white and black flecks.     If you don't like my formula, happy to taper to any formula the customer prefers.  Can cut overall length longer or shorter, if you prefer.    Have a forumla for Nites and Renegades too.  Or if you want a spinnaker sheet for your soft water boat, we also have the  Marlow
tapered line in a 5/32"-1/4" combination.

Hope this is a help
