Nine ranked sailors raced their DNs Tuesday in fabulous conditions in Michgan's Upper Peninsula.
The ice was smooth and fast, the wind blew in the low teens, there was plenty of ice to race a three-quarter mile course; the weather was comfortable too.
They traveled from throughout Michigan to race on Munuscong Lake, in the eastern Upper Peninsula. The Lake is an expansion of the St. Mary's River that flows from Lake Superior to Lake Huron.
They are looking at their rigged boats while staying on the shore at Dan's Resort. From Cedarville, they drove north on M 129 to Pickford, then east on Gogomain Road.
Also sailing DNs with them were North America's Top Junior, Sam Myers, from Menominee; Dick Wollam and Bob Gray, from Traverse City; Bruce Williams and David frost from the Gull Lake Ice Yacht Club; and Jim Grogan and Don Niles from the White Lake in western Oakland County.
They plan to sail Wednesday before returning home for Christmas.
They raced a three-quarter mile course because of the small fleet. There was ice further out for a 1.5 mile course. North bound Jim Grogan reported from Houghton Lake that it was skimmed over and needed more cold to become raceable.
These lakes are possible venues to make up the postponed 2011 DN Central Lakes regatta, possibly New Year's weekend..
