Novice regatta registration
«
on:

I am planning on attending the NA's and Gold Cup for the first time. I have never participated in an event so large, just local sailing. Do/can I register as a novice. I have been in the DN association for at least 15 years. I realize that there are probably quite a number of people, not only in the north east but in the other regions that could bo wondering the same thing.

Welcome to the world of "ranked sailing"! I have not missed one myself, since I started in 2006.
In short- YES you qualify to register as a Novice despite your years of membership!
Here are the bylaws that refer specifically to the Novice qualifications:
Novice entries: Novice DN racers may enter one or both regattas if two years association dues are paid. No other event registration fee will apply. A DN racer shall be considered a novice if that person has never belonged to IDNIYRA, or if their membership has lapsed five or more years. A novice must comply with all other entry requirements.

And if you read the bylaw text - it only refers to membership status and not to status of having sailed a ranked regatta. will make an official statement after reading and discussion amongst officers - something I that needs to wait till the family fun time is over.

Here's the biggie about attending the regatta--know the iceboating "right of way" rules!! They are not the same as the summer rules. The most important thing to remember: avoid collisions and know how to handle your boat in a variety of conditions. If you are not comfortable in a certain condition, just don't race. Don't be a macho man if this is your first big regatta. Avoiding collisions is a big one. Good luck!!--Susie Pegel, formerly DN 905
