Does a stiffer plank cause the mast to bend more or less?

It is my understanding that the more flexible a plank is the more a mast will bend. As the plank bends the mast lays over more decreasing the angle between the mast and side stay which in turn bends the mast more because of additional compression on the mast. That's what I've been told.
