The Holiday Classic will be free (if it happens) this year, sponsored by the Toledo Ice Yacht club and the Central Lakes Region.
Awards will not be "flashy" or "expensive"  but they will be unique!
Future Holiday Classics will likely have a small fee, espescially when its a stand-alone regatta and support costs add up.

There are reports beginning to fill in from the upper half of Michigan.
Cadillac, Houghton, and Pontiac are all being watched as the temps drop.  None have been walked yet, and most still have holes or are suspect at this time.
Lows of 18-20 degrees and highs of 27-30 degrees in Cadillac could make plenty of ice.  And forecasts a few degrees cooler at Houghton.

I welcome and look forward to all reports!

We have a newbie-focus in our regional regatta here.  So find a newbie to coach, shadow, or harass!
Also, GOLD FLEETERS if you are comfortable with it, this is a great regatta to get a friend of similar weight to come out and borrow your boat for the silver races.  This is how we get em started!

-Kent Baker

P.S. - Registration is open online.  Submit your registration and pay online NOW and save $5.00
IF for some reason, Mother Nature does not agree with our plans, your fees will be applied to the 2013 Centrals.

With no new Post-christmas reports and a storm blowing across NW Ohio and SE Michigan, we are issuing a Postponment until Friday.  This will help allow for those coming from Rhode Island and Minnesota, as well as for those wishing to celebrate the life of Jan Gougeon.

We are anxiously awaiting reports from the upper half of Michigan...
Cadillac, Missaukee, Houghton, and Higgins are just some of the lakes that have not been ruled out.

Think Ice!

Big thanks to US472 Coberly, US5172 Betzodt, US5250 Siegle, US3 Grogan, US 65 Gray and US 4882 Wollum for the ice reports so far.
No ice has been throuroughly checked at this time.

Cadillac is thin and rough.
Missaukee is now snow ice, with either an open spot in the middle, or clean new ice there.  This spot could be good for scrub racing, but will be small and will be lots of ice fishermen to contend with.

Houghton Lake is thin on the edges, but nice looking new ice a ways out.  Not sure if it will be thick enough.  Local authorities have not yet plowed the accesses to the lake, which is probably their way of keeping people off.  Temps there will be low 20s at night, high 20s by day.    Given the forecasted winds of less than 10 for all of northern Michigan we will need pretty clear ice for the weekend.

We will postpone the regatta to Saturday start.  It is my hope that some more potential spots are checked as people travel to and from Saginaw Thursday Afternoon/ Friday morning.  This is our last chance for the 2012 Central Lakes Region Champs.  Absolute last call to be made BY NOON Friday if not before.
 Undecided

UPDATE - Houghton Lake has beautiful clear black Ice.  There are people walking it and ice fishermen out.  Our checker was unable to determine exact thickness.  He is staying the night and doing a comprehensive check and possibly sail in the morning.
if anyone is available to go help with the scouting in the morning please get a hold of Glen Betzoldt or contact me to get his number if you are available.
Tonights temps should bottom out at 13 degrees which will help out!

Great first day of sailing...ice is great and the forecast tomorrow is for more wind. Really glad we're getting this in...and there's still time to get here for some sailing tomorrow if you couldn't be here today. Thank you Commodore Kent and the team!

On behalf of the entire Eastern contingient I want to thank everyone that made the Centrals possible last weekend!   We had a ball and enjoyed seeing everybody out that way-   Give yourselves a hand for a job well done-

See the New England Ice Yacht Association site (link below) for our reports from the road- and hotel.  And pub.

We have the Eastern Regionals on the calendar for January 12-13....  Weather and ice permitting of course but think about it-  would be great to see y'all on some New England Yankee ice!

Info will be on this bulletin board and also the NEIYA site at
http://theneiya.org/

Thanks and Best,
