Friends:

Sorry to report, that there are no reports(ice reports that is).  There are however, lots of weather reports that indicate warm weather and rain which is not a good combination for ice safety.   Undecided

Therefore the Central Lakes Champs 2013 is POSTPONED.   Cry

The timing of the rain event which will take place Friday makes it impossible to re-check the ice before the beginning of the regatta.

I dont want to get on a soapbox here on ice safety...  I hope I am preaching to the crowd!  This is one of those times I would rather us be invisible and forgotten by the media!

I am open to discussion about the re-scheduling of this event.  Typically, we do not schedule this event on the weekend immediately before and after the Gold Cup and NAC's.  However this would then put us at February 16th - potentially very late in the season.  Your input will be helpful!!

Eastern Lakes Championships is Scheduled for this weekend as well.  Sunapee, NH is a viable site, but will have high temps and very low wind in the forecasts.  Keep tuned to Eben and the guys out there for more information.

Lake Muskegon is not panning out to be what we hoped.  The ice, was flattening out yesterday, but it did receive some wet snow on it before freezing which has slowed it down considerably.
While the site has missed most of the snowfall that was predicted so far, there is a considerable amount forecasted this evening through Saturday night.  Add to the forecast for light wind Sunday makes it likely that in best case scenario we could have one day of racing there.
At this time The Central Lakes Region Regatta is Postponed one week.

I would personally drive there and sail Saturday if I lived within 2 hours drive.  (Sadly, I do not)
The folks at WMIYC have been very helpful in ice checking and finding hotel accommodations, launch site, and even securing use of MYC for iceboater enjoyment.  A big thanks to Commodore Dean Runk, Peter Blacklock, and Randy Rogoski for information and planning that went into this.  If you plan on going out there please get in contact with Dean Runk, commodore of WMIYC if you need more information or updates.

Anchor Bay (Mt. Clemens, MI) is another possibility, but it had some thin ice areas on Thursday and to my knowledge hasn’t been sailed yet.  I will post if I hear any new reports from US 99 over there.

Our good friends at 4LIYC have extended an invitation for any wayward sailors to come to Madison, WI for fun and racing there.  Might be at Mendota check www.iceboat.org for details.  The attached photo was just leaked..  apparently they are using highly advanced Ice checking technique out there.

Maumee Bay in Toledo was (and still is I think) being checked by a pair of dogs.  So far it appears that they are still dry.  Not sure if that means anything as a 90 pound dog (well fed as they seem to be) on four-legs is not comparison to an adult human on 2!  The shoreline is soft and I am surprised they got on without getting wet.  Maybe we can find a new launch site through them?

Keep on Thinking ICE!

The hunt for regatta ice for the 2013 Centrals is still on.

Anchor Bay at Mt. Clemens Michigan has been sailed quite a bit the last few days (except yesterday where it was "blowin' de dawg of der chain").  We hope to hear more reports from US 44 and US 99 soon!  As of yet they have not identified a launch for this ice but have been using US (Redacted to protect the guilty- its what we do in this organization)'s home for ice checking and skimmer-launching.

The Maumee Bay ice held on longer than expected, but it finally blew out a few nights back.  At first glance it appears to be re-froze.  But if you look carefully (or check the water level monitoring http://www.glakesonline.nos.noaa.gov/monitor.html )  you can see that the water level has been between -10 and -36" BELOW low water datum in the gusty westerly wind.  This is called "seiche" and Lake Erie demonstrates the most extreme fluctuations (sometimes over 4' in a day!).  In fact what I am looking at out my window is frozen bottom with snow on it.

Great sailing was had at Lake Muskegon on Friday and Saturday morning last weekend.  However it is now a known fact that US 5285 brought upon the fleet a dark cloud of snow that will probably follow him about the central region for the remainder of the season.  I have thought about sending him to Sandusky or Columbus, Ohio for future regattas to help avert the snow.  All kidding aside, its great to see some of our sailors who have not been able to participate the last few years back in action.  (Right 4911??)

Meanwhile, US 4882 has been very quiet this week.  I am guessing he and US 4868 have stocked up on firewood and canned goods (and bottled, I imagine) and planning on a brief hibernation until the Fun Regatta becomes possible.

So to summarize this report:  "I got nuthin!"   this had been purely designed to deliberately waste your time, when you should be out looking for ice!  And if you were pulling out your yearbook looking up sail numbers, I guess it wasted a whole lot more time than necessary - perhaps the time you needed to stone your runners.  This was all US 216's idea so blame him.

Think Ice!

With no reports of regatta ice we are postponing the Centrals yet again.

The Canadian Champs are tentatively called on for Kingson, Ontario.  This is about 7 hours or so from Detroit, and likely will be well-attended by our East Coast Friends who are not having the best season.

In the Central region:
There are reports of sailing from private launches near Anchor Bay in Mt. Clemens, MI thin ice and holes have healed up nicely there, but high winds have made all the local public launches a wreck.

Also there are reports of sailable conditions at Walled Lake.  This presents a good potential scrub venue with a nice nearby restaurant for refreshments.  It is probably a 6 out of 10.  It was sailed by a local on an Arrow yesterday.  Was walked by US 4480 today who saw 2 Ice Shantees on it, minimal snowmobile rutting, and feels it to be quite sailable.

There will be snow on Friday, but warm temps this weekend should keep it soft and easy to sail through.  This has NOT been sailed by a ranked sailor.   Hopefully someone might give a detailed, sailed report on it tonight or tomorrow.

After some discussion with our new CENTRAL REGION REAR COMMODORE, Bill Cutting - we have agreed to post TWO DATES for the Central Region Regatta 2013:

IF we have ice that is described as "9+", or "EPIC" (and that is all caps, Epic not just any typical overused epic), "Black Ice", "Glass Ice", etc....  We will have the regatta on December 14th & 15th.

The dates of the 27th-29th would still be the "Holiday Classic" regatta.

If no regatta ice is available on December 14t-15th, we will hold the 2013 Centrals on the 28th-29th with the "Holiday Classic" as a tune-up regatta on the 27th.

We apologize for any inconvenience or misunderstanding.

With the news of the snow at Houghton, that venue is definitely out.  We are looking for Ice in Michigan or Ohio to hold the Central Lakes Region Championships.
If nothing pans out then we will have to postpone until the 28th, and 29th.  (with the Holiday Classic regatta held on the 27th.
So hold tight...  and please any of you that have information, or the ability to scout Ice, we will hold off until Thursday evening for next notice.

Sorry to report that snow and wind has not helped our quest for ice this weekend.  Thanks to the many who checked ice on many lakes including Elk Lake, Sand Lake, Walled Lake, Maumee Bay, etc.

The official and final dates for the 2013 Central Lakes Region Regatta IS December 28-29 with the HOLIDAY CLASSIC REGATTA on December 27th.

Have a great Holiday Season, and please consider joining us for this great regatta before the new year!

Good Evening Everybody!

Here is a PREPORT of conditions at three potential locations so far:

Generally speaking the region of the three locations scouted {(Maumee Bay, Toledo, Ohio), (Wamplers Lake, Brooklyn, MI), and (Anchor Bay, Clinton Twp., MI)}  We expect to see excellent ice making conditions tonight and Thursday night.  Saturday appears to be the warmest day (41 in Toledo, 36 in Anchor Bay).   Snow Accumulations should be negligible.  Friday winds 6-8 MPH  Saturday and Sunday winds 12-14 mph.

Maumee Bay - was just walked.  saw 2.5"-4.5"  90% Dark ice with occasional bump (every 4-8') of rough stuff caused by frozen snow.  Currently NO snow on the ice.  Probably rates 6-7 ice, but again will not be sailed until Wednesday.  Thinnest ice was near shore, and there was also mud/shells occasionally in the first 40-50 yards from shore.  Would probably use pit runners to get to the race course from this venue.
Public Access will need to be further researched if this site is to be selected.  (one small area available, two other sites may be okay if ice conditions allow).

Wamplers Lake - IS BEING SAILED TODAY!  report is of 5"+ ice.  similar conditions to Maumee Bay ice (melted snow-spots on top of green ice).  There is access and hospitality being offered at
Jerrys Pub.  Lodging is available in Nearby Brooklyn, MI or Jackson.

Anchor Bay - Has been walked about a mile out.  There have been ice fisherman on it since Monday.  5"-6" Ice.  Similar ice conditions as above.  Is to be sailed on Christmas Day.
Many hotel options in nearby Roseville, MI.  There are several public access points that will be checked out.

We will try and factor more or less in this order:  Ice Thickness/Safey,  Course Conditions, Weather, Ice Access, Lodging.  I am happy to entertain any of your thoughts or concerns with any of the venues, but PLEASE BY EMAIL ONLY!
Its kind of a busy family-type night if you know what I'm saying?

WE will only consider SAILED ICE for this regatta, so no ice reports of unsailed ice will be accepted after 5PM Wednesday.

This weekends racing will include the HOLIDAY CLASSIC REGATTA on Friday (No Charge for participating) and the Central Lakes Championship on Saturday - Sunday.

This is getting exciting as We currently have sailors from as far West as Minneapolis, and As far East as Rhode Island/Massachusetts all ready to leave on Thursday.
