Due to recent weather events, no verified sailable regatta ice is available at this time.
However, we have two sites of great interest that will be evaluated and possibly sailed Tuesday 1/22.
Those sites are are:
Houghton Lake,  Houghton Heights, Michigan.
Lake Pepin, Lake City Minnesota.
Others may come into play between now and Wednesday night.
Next update will be at 9 P.M. EST Wednesday January 23

Just a reminder... since many of you are going over your runners and equipment now...
Make sure you DE-GREASE AND DE-WAX all surfaces that must have equipment stickers.  This is Espescially the case with runners.
As a reminder, see the attached image citing the race instruction and a diagram of where the stickers go.
We hope that this clarification will make everything easier for both the Race Officials and the Competitors.

The 2013 Gold Cup World Championships and North American Championships are ON for LAKE PEPIN and Lake City, MN.
Backup regatta locations are Lake Mendota - Madison, WI and Green Bay - Menomonee, MI
A block of rooms is available at the AMERICINN 1 651 345 5611  Rooms start at $75.90 night (weeknight) for two queen beds.   Other rooms with single kings, single queens, jacuzzi, etc may be available upon request.  Tell them you are with the Iceboating group.
The other major place for accomodations is the Willows on the River 1 651 345 9900  Where Condominiums can be had in the range of $85+ tax and up.
Other lodging? -  check for bed and breakfasts, and Hotels in Redwing, MN.
Details about the official Regatta Headquarters will be determined later, but probably between the two closely located places above.

More lodging options here in Lake City. Between them all, should be room for DN group, especially if you get some of the condos at either Villas on Pepin or Willows. All lodging locations are within 1-2 miles of sailing area. Should be no need to go 20 miles to Red Wing, but they do have a few fancier places and it is a neat historic town too.

If link doesn't work, Google Lake City Chamber.

I stayed at the Sunset Inn (next door to the AmericInn) last time we were in town.

I don't know their rates now, but I seem to remember paying something like $40/night.

Easy walking to the AmericInn or the Willows for socializing.

Cheers,

It seems that Americinn may have mistakenly told some people they were booked up when there were at least a dozen rooms left.  Around 11 AM they still had rooms.
Also the Willows on the River has another condo building down the street.  Part of the Toledo group stayed there a few years ago - just like renting a furnished apartment!

We will be using a "closed starting line finish". All boats will go around the ends of the starting line and NO CROSSING THE START LINE, unless walking the boat in preparation for the start.

The potential for a large course gives us an opportunity to enhance the safey in the finish and pit area by simplifying traffic patterns after the finish and behind the pit area. This also eliminates the danger zone in the middle of the pit area.
Fleets can be lined up just before the previous fleet finishes a race, allowing for less delays, and MORE RACING!

All sailors and crew at the DN Gold Cup regatta in Lake City, MN:  The buffet dinner at the PORT 104 restaurant is ON FOR TONIGHT!   Please patronize these nice people who have been very cooperative with our variable scheduling demands.   It is also possible that the annual meeting could be held there, but we need to get invited back!!
Repeat: THE BUFFET DINNER IS ON FOR TONIGHT at PORT 104!

There was nothing doing wind-wise Monday; all patiently endured a day of waiting around. At 2 p.m. the race committee called it a day, and pre-banquet cocktail parties began.

Lake Pepin:
Ice here is still thick.  We ended up sailing day one in drifted crusty snow (50% cover, up to 2 inch deep).  Wintry mix made visibility a problem as the sail windows froze on both sides, and could not be cleared with mittens.  One race was sailed in each fleet.  Then racing was called due to dangerous visibility conditions and cold, wet race committee.

New snow on the ice Monday morning softened up quickly and was "sailable" at about 1/2-3/4 deep.  But winds of 10 plus were needed to race.  At the end of the day one last zephyr came through for about 15 minutes where some boats could sail, but only reach to reach.   Racing was called for the day at 2 PM, and at 7PM about 75 sailors and crew went to a local establishment for a buffet dinner together.

Today we are looking at softer snow conditions, warmer weather, possible rain...  all this could lead to better ice conditions, albeit miserable to stand around in and wait for wind.  Forecasts may have the breeze up to 15 mph today which will be good.
