sail often, travel light

Well, it was an iceboater. There was a goose hole to the right, swampy end, of the lake and one of the new guys to the sport went to get a closer look at the geese.  Wet, cold and no harm, fortunately.  He did make local news, unfortunately.

A few clues:

1.  If it hasn't been checked, it is suspect.

2. If geese are swimming, the water is soft.

Ice safety tips:

A.  Walk and check it before sailing it.

B.  Talk to locals or others who have been on the lake.  They know where it is safe today (they didn't fall in, right?)  Locals know where it is seldom safe.  Talk to folks!

C.  Carry bear claws for self rescue.  If you go in, you are at the scene first.  YOu should be ready to self rescue.

D.  Sail with a buddy, keep an eye on each other.

E.  Look out for newbies and wild-men.  Notelling where they will go.  If they are lost, it is a bad thing for us all, and a very bad thing for them!

F.  Leave word with friends and family and the other iceboaters, so they know when you expect to be back.  Joes car and no Joe is worth investigating.

G.  If some one is late back, ask for help, if there is none ask for help from the local rescue squad.

This is one fun sport, but there are risks.  Understand the risks, minimize your exposure, and mitigate your risk  with preparation, experience, and a buddy.

1) Never go on the ice alone
2) Always look for others on the ice
3) Wear a PDF

I broke all three rules and went in last week
