Is there any chance that the 2010 Western Regional Championship is going to happen in December?

We will do that if we can.  Two options, Dec 11-12 or 18-19.

Call in ice reports!

This looks like a likely GO.  A bit of iffy forecast for snow.  Tune in Thursday evening.

Primary site is Fond du Lac, WI  Survivable snow event is forecast, and by Thursday evening, we'll see how much snow actualized in the area.  Forecast is better at Lake Pepin, need reports!

Pepin,  gonna be cold and windy on Sunday possibly outside the Dead Lake experience...

We'll get you a surface condition and thickness report...

Modis imagery indicates a high probability of suitable ice in either Pepin or Lake City...

Pack plate runners!

From Ken Smith:

Currently we are considering Senachwine Lake, just SW of Peru, IL (sailed today, reported 6+ condition, snow ice, no obstructions)

The final-decision will be posted no later than 10:00am tomorrow (Friday) here and on the hotline.

Because of poor weather forecasts at all regatta sites the Western Region regatta has been postponed a week to December 18-19.

Thanks to everyone who scouted lakes and reported conditions.  Cool
Keep those reports coming in!

The "one-two" combination of yesterday's storm and the increasingly severe forecasts for the one expected on Saturday really made all the sites impossible.  Cry

MODIS satellite imagery showed the north end of Lake Winnebago is clear and a ranked sailor drove up this morning to confirm. Report was: 2 1/2 inches of perfect hard black ice.

The plan is to sail it Thursday morning.
If anyone is available to help with that please send me an e-mail or private-message here on the board.

The regatta is ON for the northern end of Winnebago the weekend of Dec. 18 and 19th.

Other sites may come into play as the week progresses. Check back here or on the hotline.

After sailing this morning the ice was rated a 10.
Thickness was 4-5 inches throughout the sailing area.

Stand by for hotel and other details.

The sailing site is Fresh Air Camp in Neenah Wisc.  Off of Hwy. US 41 take exit 129 for Bell St. and go east on Bell St. for approx 2.5 miles to the launch site.  Bell St. turns into Maple St. at the Junction of Cty. A and there is a MacDonalds on the corner.  Keep going east until you come to the launch.  There are no facilities at the launch site.  It will be possible to push a trailer onto the ice, but there is a lot of snow in the ramp that will need to be packed down to facilitate this.

The area has been sailed, but not extensively and the area is huge.  There are 5 inches of clear black ice everywhere.  Seams that were not there today, may be there tomorrow so be careful, look around, and stay within site of another sailor.  Do not park your boat in front of the ramp as there may be other traffic using the ramp.

A block of rooms has been set aside at the the Hawthorne Inn in Oshkosh at a rate of 79.90 for a double with two queen beds.  The phone number for the motel is 920-303-1133.  Ask for the iceboat rate. The motel is located at exit 116 off of US 41 in Oshkosh.  This is Ripon Rd. and Hwy. 44.  The hotel is across the highway from EAA.  There are other motels in the area.  It is a 15 min drive from the hotel exit to the launch site exit.

Reservations have been made for 6:00 PM Sat. night at Fratellos which is located just east of Hwy. 41 at the exit for Hwy. 21 into Oshkosh.  Go east on 21, cross the river and it is on your left.  You will be going by this exit on the way to the sailing site. Faratellos is fun restaurant with its' own brewery.  Ron showed iceboat movies in the bar there at one time.
