The boat weights around 120 lbs in racing trim, the skipper weights quite a bit more. Weight placement is key in tacking and gybing. You need to get weight on the front runner to tack and gybe. You do this by sliding forward in the boat.
It might also help to run your plank one position aft .
You can’t ease the mainsheet too much in a high speed tack or gybe because it makes the sail more full and increases drag and decreases weight on the front runner.
If you want to experiment, sail downwind when it is blowing and your weight back, now quickly ease the mainsheet all the way. The boat will probably do a wheelie and you will loose any ability to steer. Haul the sheet back in and the nose comes down and you can steer again. The point of this is to realize that blowing the sheet when you need to tack/gybe to avoid a collision will produce the opposite result.
Buy Loyd and Warner's book. The racing advice in it is a bit out of date, but it is great reading and you will learn a good bit from it.
