Track spikes aren't expensive...
Size 15 for $20:
http://www.eastbay.com/product/model:65119/sku:11893601/?supercat=home&cm=GLOBAL%20SEARCH:%20PRODUCT%20NUMBER%20SEARCH
Size 12.5 for $10:
http://www.eastbay.com/product/model:75137/sku:14285061/?supercat=home&cm=GLOBAL%20SEARCH:%20PRODUCT%20NUMBER%20SEARCH
Goto
http://www.eastbay.com/
and select "Shoes", "Men's Track and Field/XC", sort "Price (Low to High)".
I'm sure there are other similar sites with "close out" prices on last-year's models.

My experience is that track spikes give you and edge and confidence on your starts. Those strap-on type "creepers" are nice for non-competetive use, but the force exerted when pushing in a sprint often makes them flex or even come off.
I have been using a pair of track spikes I bought cheap at a second-hand sports store 4 or 5 years ago. A good pair of wool socks with a pair of waterproof (gortex) socks over them is all I use. This year I added galoshes (a special type often called "NEOS") that allow your whole shoe to be put inside to keep your feet warmer between races. Wish I did that earlier.

If you have "fat" feet you should get New Balance track spikes. They have the widest models. They are also available from East Bay
