I am thinking of putting a roof rack on my Van,thought it could fill dual purpose, carry my Wifes kayak in the summer and my DN in the winter.I included a picture of the support system.Do you think it would be better to support the DN on its side or bottom.Does anyone else use a kayak rack for there DN?

Either bottom or side is fine.  easier to tie if the boat is on its bottom.  Side takes up less room if you have multiple boats, masts, etc on the roof.  A standard flat bar Thule rack is my recomendation.  Use  heavy ratcheting straps and get a tight fitting cover if you drive  more than 100 mph.
