« on: February 04, 2007, 11:55:58 AM »

Welcome to the forum board of the IDNIYRA, North America.  This forum is sponsored by the DN class.  The purpose of this forum is to promote the sailing and racing of DN iceboats.  This includes communication among members and guests, exchange of building, tuning and racing information, and coordination of sailing so sailable, safe ice can be found and shared.

Most of the board is open for anyone to read.  If you register, you are a "member" and you may post.  If you are a paid IDNIYRA member, you have access to the 'DN members only' section.

If you are a member, the board allows you to send and receive personal e-mail messages on the forum.  Click on the name of the addressee (such as the upper left corner of one of his or her posts, or in the members section), and you will get a screen to write the message.  If you have received a message, there will be a number in parenthese by the "MY MESSAGES" tab at the top of the page.  Click there to read, write or reply.

Several posters have gained access and posted inappropriate material.  When a new person registers, the current procedure is that they get an e-mail reply.  If they respond to that e-mail, then they are signed up.  This requires a bit of time, and for the new person to read his e-mail, but so far has eliminated the spammers.  The administers can ban people and ban URLs, but  so far, the system is working OK. [added 9-15-2009]

This board will evolve, and this writer would like to publish all the Runner Track articles in the "members only"
section shortly after mailing, limit rules discussions to members, and other features of most interest to members and active racers.  The rest, including the tricks of building and sailing are free to interested folks around the world.  Your comments welcome!

Reply to this string with feedback to improve, add, or change features.  See also www.dnamerica.org and check out the snow cover, archives, class rules and other features.

Rules:

1.  Be respectful and on topic.  Disrespect to posters, posting items not related to iceboats and the clothing and equipment needed to sail them is not on topic.

2.  No profanity, insulting or degrading posts are appropriate.

3.  Items for sale or looking to buy also need to be on topic.

4.  Items posted are open to public view and no privacy can be assured.  This is a semi-public form, and the originators of the board, the IDNIYRA, the administrators and the officers of the class take no responsibility for any post.  A reasonable and diligent effort will be made to keep the posts on this forum within the bounds stated above.  This does not mean inappropriate posts might not pass onto the site from time to time, but means that the volunteer site administrators will make regular efforts to limit inappropriate posting and remove inappropriate posts.  This is supposed to be fun, so lighten up, ok?

5.  Safety in iceboating is and should be an item of concern.  Fundamental rules to enhance safety are encouraged:
   a.  Never sail alone.
   b.  Set a return time and have someone look for you if you do not check in.
   c.  Check the ice.  Avoid hazardous ice conditions.
   d.  Avoid collisions.
   e.  Be considerate and cautious around other users of the ice, especially
pedestrians, skaters, skiers, dogs, and fisherfolk.   Wink
   f.   Be cautious around motorized vehicles, especially those moving fast.
   g.  Wear a helmet.  Dress appropriately.

Let the discussions begin!   Grin

If you read this and cannot post to this board, you must register.

If you are a paid IDNIYRA member, and you cannot see the "members only" section, then click on my name on the upper left and send me an e-mail with your sail number.  I can and will upgrade your board member status.

Anyone interested can now register and be part of this forum.

Click the bold "DN NA Class>Guest & Members Post & Read" to jump up to the level you want to view.  At the first two levels, and when you first go to DNAmerica each day, click "Sign-in/register" to log-in or to register for the first time.  After you first enter the registration data, I get a message and will shortly thereafter activate the membership and send you a confirmation message.  If you misbehave badly, I can block your posting on the board.  One problem with a spammer so far... This way, spammers and anyone proved to be unwelcome can be excluded from posting.

Once registered, your user name or your e-mail address used in registration goes in the Name block, and your password in the password block.

You can edit your password or other personal data at anytime by going to "Profile" link near the sign-in block.

If you do not join and activate yourself on the forum by clicking "join" then you cannot see pictures or links inserted into messages.

Posters, if you post the link by typing, rather than pasting it in (an active link), then it will appear as text.

If you want a better chance at being approved quickly,

please send an e-mail to

Capt.DNAmerica@gmail.com

from the e-mail address you want to use as your alternate name, the one you use to register,

Include a line containing a brief description about your interest in iceboating or any coherent sentence.

An account will be set up in your name.  The initial username and password will be sent in reply.

Holy cow.  We are now getting 6-10 spam requests to join every day.

If you have a name or url that looks like random numbers and letters, you get rejected.  If your are sellingcoats@sellingcoats.com, you get rejected.  if you are hotbootie@myfriends.com, you are getting rejected.

If you and five of your buddies all are on the same day or week from @123mill.com (or any such common name) you are all rejected and I write a ban trap to keep you out.

We give up.  The new member process in the sign-in block in the register area is hopeless.

Send an e-mail.  Bots don't do that and sound like people.

Thanks,

Capt DN America

We have a LOT of attempts to register that are bogus.

In order to make my life easy, I automatically reject the attempt if the domain is "[anything].info"

If you have such a domain and are legit, sorry.  Use another e-mail account.

I am NOT successful at guessing names and domains as bogus.  Some of you have strange e-mail addresses, and life is to be enjoyed, so I don't reject outright just based on the names.  Well . .  if you are viagraboy @freemeds.com, you might be rejected outright.

Lots of names I suspect are truly legit, like DN 7788 @ someplace.com never respond to the "are you real" e-mail and get rejected.  Register again and then answer your e-mail to correct.  A few have been accepted and still could not sign in or post e-mail.  Let me know if that is true by replying to the Congratulations/welcome e-mail.  I'll fix it and if it a system problem, I'll work on fixing that, too.

The good news is the systems seems to be keeping the junk-posting scum off the bulletin board.

Enjoy.  We are only 4 months from the Superior regatta!
