The Eastern Region does us proud!

The Gold Cup is held on the North American Continent every other year. And while the Eastern Region hosts the regatta once every 6 years it has been way too long since the Gold Cup has been held on eastern ice. So, you can imagine the excitement out east when the 2015 Gold Cup was called “ON” for Kinston Ontario.

Instantaneously, 89 boats from 8 different countries descended on the Kingston Yacht Club. The sailors were greeted with ice as far as the eye could see, a protected harbor and a Yacht Club boasting a fully stocked bar with two bartenders. By anyone’s definition, it was a prefect venue for a big event.

Much to our surprise, the Kingston Yacht Club began as an ice boat yacht club. Its trophy case proudly displays several very old stern steerer trophies and a beautiful stern steerer picture hangs over the Club’s fireplace.  And, you’d be hard pressed to recall a DN regatta where the DN fleet has been greeted by a more hospitable group of local sailors.

More importantly, enough can’t be said about the legions of volunteers that helped organize and run this year’s Gold Cup.  Many of them were deservedly recognized throughout the regatta and at the awards ceremony.  But, if you ask anyone who was close to this event they will tell you that Eben Whitcomb, Eastern Regional DN Class Commodore, was the man at the helm. He was a driving force behind this regatta and a major reason why the Gold Cup and NAs were such a huge success. Because of that, I think it is important that we thank Eben publicly, and repeatedly.

Thank you, Commodore Whitcomb.  Your efforts are appreciated.

Only those who have been involved in putting together a championship regatta, particularly when on one or two day's notice, can really appreciate all that is involved.

High five to Eben and the entire team, on and off the ice.  Looking forward to the next championship.

Awesome job Eben.  Can't thank you enough for your dedication to our sport.  A great Gold Cup to remember.  A big thank you also to all the volunteers for a job well done.
